The Department of Computer Science & Information Technology (IT) is made up of a team of knowledgeable staff who are highly dedicated to their subject area. Qualifications are offered up to Level 2 in Information Technologies and Creative iMedia. Students are encouraged to develop independent learning and computer based skills which will be greatly used in any job, as technology is the future of our lives.
We have a Curriculum Area Leader for Computer Science & ICT who is supported by a team of non-specialists and technical staff. The faculty is spread throughout the school with the main teaching base located on Level 1 of the western wing of Main Corridor, above the staffroom.
The Computer Science & IT Department at St. Joseph’s create and deliver lessons which engage and enthuse students. From the first lesson students are taught the skills which allow them to become self-motivated learners who can use IT as a tool to aid their learning both in and out of school.
Learning skills such as personal organisation, time management, self-reflection and the ability to make mistakes and learn from them are given particular emphasis. Nobody knows which button to press all the time, and it’s how we cope when we don’t know what to do that really shows how good a learner we are.
In Years 7 and 8 students receive two, 60 minute sessions per fortnight. Within this time a vast array of skills and knowledge will be covered including programming and computer science, digital literacy, IT skills for employability, creative digital skills and units of work surrounding business and enterprise. Students are also encouraged to participate in the IDEA awards and it is hoped will achieve at least the Bronze award by the end of year 8. (https://idea.org.uk)
