St Joseph's RC High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
and young people and, expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment

Students have one lesson of Music each week. In each lesson the three areas of the National Curriculum are covered:

Performing;

Composing;

Listening and Appraising.

Performance work involves singing a variety of songs/hymns both in unison and in harmony, and using percussion, keyboards and student’s own specialist instruments to play class arrangements. Tradition and graphic notation are introduced and revised.

Students compose rhythm chains, ostinatos and simple pentatonic pieces which they play in groups or pairs using percussion instruments and keyboards. Pupils learn how to record on the multi-track facility of the keyboard and notate in an appropriate way.

Students listen to and appraise a wide range of music from different periods and places, and learn to identify the sounds of orchestral instruments both individually and in a variety of ensembles.
